Located in the city centre district of St. Pauli, in front of the famed Reeperbahn. The Union Lichtspiel Theater replaced the old Union Theatre at Spielbudenplatz 8 which was demolished in 1941 during World War II (it has its own page on Cinema Treasures).
The Union Lichtspiel Theater was built in 1951, opening in 1952 and was operated by Union Lichtspiel Theater GmbH. In 1956 it was equipped with CinemaScope and Phillips FP 5 projectors and 4-channel stereophonic sound.
In 1976 it was taken over by Bruno Koschwitz & N. Haberland who introduced ‘service at your seat’ (popcorn & soft drinks).
In 1980 it was converted into a dancehall named Kaiserpalast.
On 8th August 1988 it reopened as the famous musical theatre named Schmidts Theater. Operated by Corny Littman, Ernie Reinhardt, Mario Risp and since 1990 by Jutta Wubbe.
The building was demolished in 2004. The Schmidts Theater expanded and built a new theatre at Spielbudenplatze 24-25.
