The Rex Theater was the second movie theatre in town behind the former Opera House turned Lyric Theatre. Operating in a small location in downtown, the Rex Theatre opened in 1913 playing Universal Studio films. Successful, it moved to a new and larger location in 1915 formerly operated by The Regulator department store. The New Rex Theatre launched March 1, 1915 on Main Street. Its nickname was “the Classy House”.
Under Kinema Consolidated Circuit operation, the Rex Theatre became the Kinema Theatre on August 2, 1920 with the film, “Greater than Fame”. On May 2, 1929, the Kinema Theatre installed sound and was known as “The House of Talkies”.
In 1946, the Huish-Gilhool Theatre Circuit took on the Kinema Theatre. It also owned the the Huish Theatre and Lyric Theatre. The circuit closed the Lyric Theatre for refurbishing in 1947 and, when it relaunched, the Kinema Theatre was closed on July 19, 1947 with a “farewell show” of “Suddenly It’s Spring”. Though there were some live events over the next year, that was the last film shown in the venue.
