Located in the Harburg district of Harburg, to the south of the city. The Gloria Palast was opened on 25th December 1930 at Wilstorfer Strasse 34 (later re-named Luneburger Strasse 1). The opening film was “Brand in der Opera” (fire at the Opera), directed and produced by Carl Froelich and starring Alexa Engstroem, Gustav Froelich & Gustav Grundgens. It was part of the Hamburg cinema pioneer Henschel Theatres chain (others in the chain were the Waterloo, Schauburg and more theatres (which have their own pages on Cinema Treasures)). The architect was Eugen Schnell and it had a capacity of 1,189-seats. It was equipped with a Tobis sound system. In 1933 the Ufa Theatre GmbH chain located in Berlin, took over the operation and in 1934 it was re-named Ufa Gloria Palast. It was destroyed in 1944 by Alli3ed bombs during World War II.
In 1952 a new Gloria Palast was built and opened on the site. (It has its own page on Cinema Treasures)
