The Strand Theatre launched on July 15, 1920 in the Oppenheimer Building with four live vaudeville acts from the Keith Circuit and the film, “The Wonder Man” with boxer Georges Carpentier. The downtown theatre converted to sound and switched to full-time motion picture exhibition.
During a holiday matinee screening on December 27, 1965, the theatre burst into flames and was destroyed. Nobody was injured in the fire. The Oppenheimer building, which was located in the half block from 33 to 39 S. Main Street, was demolished. It was replaced with a Goodyear automotive repair facility in 1967.
