Located in the city centre near to Central Railway Station. Originally named Copenhagen Tivoli & Vauxhall which was inspired by the Jardin de Tivoli in Paris and the Vauxhall Gardens in London. The Tivoli Gardens opened on 15th August 1843 and was founded by George Carstensen. It is one of the oldest and still operating amusement parks & pleasure gardens in the world. The Dyrehavsbakken in Klampenborg is the oldest park, also located in Denmark.
The Tivoli Gardens included a variety of attractions like buildings in an imagined Oriental style, a Chinese style Pantomime Theatre, a Concert Hall, band stands, restaurants and cafes, flower gardens, the Tivoli lake with fountains and mechanical amusement rides. After dark, thousands of coloured lamps illuminated houses and the gardens.
In June and July 1896 the brothers Skladanowsky showed their invention the Bioskop at the Copenhagen Tivoli & Vauxhall. The Bioskop was the first film projector which could screen moving pictures. The brothers Skladanowsky were on a European tour with their film programme, which they also screened at Feldschloesschen (later Tivoli Kino) Berlin Strasse, Berlin, the first Wintergarten Variety in Central Hotel at Friedrichstrasse, Berlin and Dom Fair, Hamburg in 1885 (they all have their own pages on Cinema Treasures). This was the first screening of projected moving pictures in Copenhagen, Denmark. The Tivoli Gardens Cinema was closed in the early-1900’s.
