The Kaskade Kino was opened in 1952. It was designed by Kassel based architect Paul Bode in an Art Modern style, with seating for 903 in orchestra and balcony levels. A feature of the cinema was a water fountain located across in front of the screen, which like ‘dancing fountains’ had variations of movements set to music and controled by an operator, who had his control board in the front orchestra. This feature was used during breaks in the programme and was still in use in 1983. There was an identical feature in the Capitol Kino, Kassel, also designed by architect Paul Bode (it has its own page on Cinema Treasures). In 1956 a 182-seat second screen named Bambi was opened. In 1996 it was converted into a 4-screen cinema, with seating for 722, 102, 37 & 78. It was closed in 2000 and the auditorium has been de-twinned.
In 2019 a Denn’s BioMarkt, an organic supermarket & cafe is operating in the former foyer. While most of the interior of the cinema can still be seen through glass doors and the pipes for the water fountains are on display in their original position.
