The Camillus Plaza Shopping Center was built on the site of the former Kallet Drive-In which closed at the end of its 1960 season. The Plaza’s construction began in 1961 and opened theatre-less at its official grand opening on March 11, 1965 (although some stores opened in 1964). An expansion led to more stores in Phase II of the plaza’s development. As the center approached its 20th anniversary, a plan was announced to enclose the facility renamed as the Camillus Mall bringing a twin screen theatre to the complex.
CinemaNational launched its Camillus Mall Cinema I & II on March 25, 1983 after an invitation-only screening the previous night, with “The Black Stallion Returns” and “Spring Break". The two auditoriums each had 250-seats. The theatre proved so popular that a separate four-screen theatre was built and was named the Camillus Mall III, IV, V & VI the following year on November 9, 1984.
The Camillus Mall Cinemas changed hands moving from CinemaNational to USA Cinemas to Loews to Hoyts Cinemas. On September 2, 1996, Hoyts closed the I and II to expand the III, IV, V, and VI to a 10-screen operation. The Camillus Mall was largely demolished in 2003 when the Camillus Commons was built returning the plaza to an open air shopping and mixed use facility.
