The March 23-May 11, 1972 want ads in the Truth or Consequences Herald included: “For Sale By Owner – Palms Drive In Theatre, T or C. N. M. 2 miles SW of City limits on old Highway 85. Good 40 x 70 ft. screen. 24ft x 72 ft. block bldg. Projection room, Rest Rooms, Snack bar and store room. Good 8 in. water well. Ticket office, marquee, 180 car spaces plus additional space, 9.52 acres total. $35,000. Would consider terms, of $5,000 down or more. Oscar Conwell. Phone …”
More evidence that the Palms opened: An ad in the July 27, 1952 Denver Post for the re-release of King Kong said that it would be playing at the Palms in Truth or Consequences on Aug. 22.
Yet another spelling of the owner’s name, and a city name that’s nowhere near his drive-in, in this note in the Aug. 18, 1951 issue of Boxoffice: “The new drive-in at Hot Springs, N. M. is near completion. Called the Palms, it is owned by Oscar Conwell, who had hoped to open by July 4th.”
