With the silent movie business as a growth industry in the early-1910’s, downtown Monmouth was home to a number of movie theaters. A local entrepreneur converted a grocery store just three doors away from the post office to the Maze Theatre in January of 1911. The 238-seat theatre screened silent films and had an electric sign as its main attractor.
The Maze Theatre closed on November 20, 1913 when new operators took on the theatre . It re-emerged with a new interior and a new name. Its grand opening as the Cort Theatre was held on December 27, 1913 with William Garwood and Tsuru Aoki in “The Oath of Tsuru San”.
The Cort Theatre closed on January 2, 1916 and became a retail camera store. It had numerous other businesses over the decades.
