The Grand Theatre was built and opened in 1896. It was designed by architectural firm Hope and Maxwell of Newcastle-upon-Tyne. The ground floor had shops, with the auditorium upstairs, with seating in the Pit and above that there was a Balcony with two side boxes. It was later renamed Laygate Theatre and later the Tivoli Theatre of Varieties. It began screening films as part of the variety programme on 30th January 1905. By 1914 it was part of the Black’s Theatres chain. It became the Tivoli Theatre and began screening films full time from 15th December 1926 and was still screening silent films in July 1931. By 1934 it was listed in the Kine Yorbook as the Tivoli Theatre, operated by R. Allen, with twice nightly performances and the Tivoli Theatre closed in late-1934. It was possibly also screening films on Sundays.
