Where the 1901 map shows this block to be mainly residential, by 1907 several multi-story commercial buildings have appeared. One of these was a three-story buff brick structure with ornate balconies and fine terra-cotta ornamentation. The ground floor was occupied by the Star Theatre, offering ‘vaudeville & moving picture show’ with apartments on the upper stories. A rather narrow building, the stage was roughly square at the rear.
It did not survive long, and by 1914 the ground floor is a wallpaper & stationery store, with the second floor used by the ‘Nemacolon Club’, presumably a misspelling of Nemacolin. Today the building is rather seedy looking, but aside from a cloddish postwar remodel of the storefront, still shows off the original workmanship. It appears to be apartments with the storefront seemingly vacant.
