In about 2004 a group of film enthusiasts decided to start hosting public film screenings in the small town of Cromarty (in Ross and Cromarty, in the Highland region of Scotland) and the neighbouring parish of Resolis. Gradually the screenings developed into a charity, The Cromarty and Resolis Film Society, managed by a Board of Trustees, which also now runs the Cromarty Film Festival each December.
In January 2018 plans were announced for a permanent cinema, to be built in a yard by the ferry slip at the northern tip of the town. The projected cost was £320,000.
Planning permission was granted and work progressed during 2019. Finally, an Open Day was held on Wednesday 29th January 2020, and the Cromarty Cinema opened for films on Friday 31st January with “The Personal History of David Copperfield”, starring Dev Patel and Hugh Laurie, and Meryl Streep and Emma Watson in “Little Women”.
Programming is arranged in association with Eden Court, based in Inverness, which operates their ticket booking system.
