Crown Drive-In - Titusville, FL

The Crown Drive-In opened on November 27, 1959, screening the 1959 British crime film “Subway in the Sky” with Van Johnson & Hidegarde Neff. The second feature was the 1959 adventure film “Timbuktu” with Victor Mature and Yvonne De Carlo. The theatre was opened by Clyde N. Hall dba Orange Theatres Inc., based in Palm Beach, FL. They also operated the Florida Theatre, St, John Drive-In, and the Town Cinema in Titusville, FL. J.M Tuggle was the city manager and was assisted by W.C. Fielding. Eventually Bob McCain would become City Manager for the three theatres. On September 10, 1960 Hurricane Donna made land fall in southwest Florida and moved across the state. It took out the screen tower and marquee of the drive-in. A temporary 30ft by 50ft canvas screen was installed and the airer reopened on September 16, 1960. The late-1960’s to 1970’s saw the drive-in experience many problems screening exploitation films and adult films, so was closed on October 31, 1971, for good.

Part of the old drive-in property is mostly undeveloped, but beside it is Washington Square, which is a 64-bed Intermediate Care Facility for Developmentally Disabled.

A closer address is 1401 FL-5, Titusville, FL.

The drive-in appears in a 1972 topo map, but was gone by 1984.

Today, Central Florida Communities Housing or Washington Square sits on the property with no trace of the drive-in remaining.
