Located in the Saint Seurin - Fondaudege district of the city centre. Originally Opened in 1878 as a circus, by 1908 it was the Cirque National. It was designed by architect Jean Tournier. In the early-1900’s it became the Alhambra Cinema Gaumont. It was later used for roller skating, live theatre, music hall, dances, galas, sporting events and political meetings.
In 1959 it became the Cinema Alhambra. Seating 2,000 in orchestra and balcony levels. It hosted many concerts with famous artists appearing: Charles Trenet, Louis Armstrong, Yves Montand, Lionel Hampton, Count Basie, Jacques Brel, Edith Piaf, Charles Aznavour,Johnny Halliday, Barbara, Chuck Berry, & Pink Floyd. It was also a succesful cinema. It was closed in 1984 due to structural problems and was demolished in 1990.
The listed facade was retained and now hides the office/apartment building which was built behind.
