The Hastings Municipal Theatre was opened in 1915 and was designed by architect Henry Eli White in a Spanish Mission Revival style on its exterior and an Art Nouveau style interior. Seating is provided in orchestra and two balconies, with four boxes on each side of the proscenium. It was screening films by 1946 and was still a cinema in 1960.
In recent years it has become a live theatre venue. It was closed in 2014 to enable it to bring it up to earthquake codes. It was re-opened on 2nd March 2020, but almost immediately closed due to the Coronavirus pandemic.
