Opened in 1911 as Fullers Theatre Royal. It was designed by architect Henry Eli White. It was initially a live theatre operated by Fullers Theatres. They later operated it as a cinema re-named Royal Theatre. By 1959 it was operated by Kerridge-Odeon.
In recent years it has reverted back to live theatre use as the Theatre Royal. It was closed in November 2019 to allow for a 3-years upgrade and refurbishment.
