The Royal Theatre was an early movie house in the silent era in downtown Trenton, Illinois. It was opened by 1926. It converted to sound and was purchased by Victor Klarsfield of St. Louis who upgraded the venue and changed its name to the Gem Theatre on October 18, 1937. The theatre’s interior was destroyed by fire less than two months later on December 5, 1937.
The relaunched on February 26, 1938 with advertisements all the way through the showings of “MAS*H” on March 1, 1971. The theatre was vandalized several times thereafter so may have still been operating without advertising.
