Located on North Terrace at the corner of Frome Road. Opened on 29th November 1934 with Paul Robeson in “Showboat”. Closed in April 1938. Built at the rear of the Exhibition Buildings(now the Institute of Technology). Demolished(date unknown?), except for the extravagant decorations retained around the miniature golf course built there on the site. The screen went to the Ozone Picture Gardens in Whyalla.

Possibly also called Wondergraph Picture Pavilion. The only known open air picture gardens in Australia to have a theatre organ(possibly under it’s own cover?).
The gong and the man seen in the above picture, look very similar the man striking the gong at the begining of the Rank Organisation films.

*Chinese Gardens Opening
One more sign of approaching summer — on Friday night the Chinese Gardens Theatre on North terrace will open its doors to open-air picture-goers, and the first programme to be presented will feature the musical ‘production “Show Boat” starring Paul Robeson, Allan Jones, & Irene Dunne.
Fragrant blooms
Electricians, painters, and gardeners are all doing their part to help the theatre shed its winter disguise — rockeries are covered with fragrant blooms, and the shrubs planted specially for the coming season are in leaf. Electricians are at work erecting hundreds of feet of coloured festooning. and even the huge dragon above the proscenium seems interested in the proceedings – Contributed by Greg Lynch –
