Located in the city centre district of Stadmitte. The Alte Tonhallen was built in 1865 as a concert hall & ballroom. In 1907 movie screenings took place at this site and were presented by Welt Biograph Theater. In 1942 the Alte Tonhallen was badly damaged by Allied bombs during World War II.
After the war was ended a department store and behind that a cinema were built on this site. The Tonhallen Theater was opened on 13th November 1953. It was operated by Clemens Bude & Co. It was designed by architect Hans Nehaus. The auditorium walls colours were blue & grey. The colour of the curtain was gold. The cinema contained two DP 70 universal projectors for 356mm & 70mm film and 3-strip Cinemiracle and Cinerama projectors. A 7-channel stereophonic sound system was installed. The German premiere of the Cinemiracle production “Windjammer” was held at the Tonhallen Theater Cinerama. 3-strip Cinerama films screened here included “How the West Was Won” & “The Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm”. “It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World” was filmed in Ultra Panovision 70 and was screened in single lense Cinerama.
The Tonhallen Theater Cinerama was closed in 1968 and was later demolished.
