After ten years of operation, Leura Lodge finances were parlous. The facility was hired out for dances, horticultural shows, concerts and a variety of indoor activities (the card game euchre was popular in the 20s & 30s), but without a reliable regular rental income from film screenings, revenue was lacking. After ‘Talkies’ opened at nearby Katoomba in October 1929, Leura film audiences declined. Economic result was that local plumber James Frederick Jones, one of the Masonic bank loan guarantors, found himself as the owner of the hall. In the mid-1930s the Lodge moved its activities, merging with their nearby Katoomba brethren.
