Sound films arrived in the nearby large township of Katoomba 5th October 1929. The prohibitive cost of necessary equipment meant that many smaller locations like Lawson were slow to upgrade. The Mechanics Hall premiered regular talkie screenings on Saturday 7th October 1933.
