W.A. Prewett, Jr. of the downtown Rebel Theatre opened Greenwood’s first drive-in when the Airport Drive-In launched on September 13, 1949. The first film was Judy Garland in “Till the Clouds Roll By”. Bradford D. Stevens of New Orleans was the architect and he designed a drive-in that had 600 spots for cars and seating for 400 more. By 1955 it was operated by Russell Callan. The Airport-Drive In appears to have gone out of business on August 18, 1957. It was offered for sale.

The approximate address is 2708 US-49E, Greenwood, MS 38930. The site is now occupied by a storage company, the roadside sign/marquee was still there in 2016 on Google Street View, you can still faintly see some ramp markings and the foundation of the concession building remains.

Could it have re-opened as the Delta Drive-In?

Interesting, I didn’t see the Delta before but advertisements for it said “Highway 49 South” but I think that just means south of Greenwood so you are probably right. It might’ve sat idle for a few years then reopened under new owners as the Delta, its funny though because in a news article they claimed Delta was the first drive-in in Greenwood and held 300 cars when according to the above the Airport held double that amount.

I can see the drive-in holding 300 cars, but not 600. Given its unusual shape, the Airport Drive-In might have been considerably larger and lost part of its property before becoming the Delta.

Plus, since the Delta took over from the Airport, it could technically still be called the “first drive-in in Greenwood”.
