The Majestic Theatre was Quitman’s primary sound-era theatre. It was built to replace the aging silent theatre, the Royal Theatre housed in the Masonic Lodge which had opened on April 10, 1920. The McNeill Brothers - Sam and Walter - bought the Royal Theatre from J.C Reddoch in June of 1930. While waiting completion, they installed the sound system and changed the name of the Royal Theatre to the Majestic Theatre for about two months (it has its own page on Cinema Treasures). The new Majestic Theatre opened August 27, 1930 with Sue Carol in “Why Leave Home?”.
The Buckwalters bought the theatre and remodeled it in 1940 for a more Streamline Moderne style. In October of 1954, the theatre converted to widescreen to play CinemaScope films. Phil Murphy and Mrs. Buckwalter sold the theatre to Lloyd Royal Jr. and Sr. in February of 1956. They closed to refresh the theatre relaunching March 15, 1956 with a grand reopening and the film, “The Tender Trap” starring Frank Sinatra. The theatre was refreshed in 1959 for its final look.
The Majestic Theatre closed August 30, 1967 with the John Wayne and Kirk Douglas western “The War Wagon”. The neighboring W.E. Blair Sons Department Store purchased the building in October and deconstructed the space to expand. The former Majestic Theatre is not recognizable though still standing in the 2020’s.
