Palace Cinema

Marchant’s Picturdrome was opened in 1912, operated by Fred Marchant. It had a small stage, dressing room and offices. It was closed in the summer of 1914 and was later demolished.

Fred Marchant built a ‘new’ Palace Cinema on an adjacent site, opening in 1920 (it has its own page on Cinema Treasures). The site of the former Marchants Picturedrome/Palace Cinema became the site of the Union Cinema which opened in September 1937 (it has its own page on Cinema Treasures).

The name was changed to ‘The Palace’ in its final years, as can be seen in the photo that I’ve uploaded, hence the ‘New’ Palace being built next door later on. The plot of land remained in the ownership of Fred Marchant until he sold the New Palace to Southan Morris, who in turned sold it to Union Cinemas. This then, gave Union the building plot for the Union to be built.
