The Lichtburg Filmpalast was opened in 1931 with 1,200-seats in orchestra and balcony levels. The theatre was located in the city centre at Konigstrasse 60. In 1937 the address was re-named Rudolf Hess Strasse 60. In 1950 it was re-named again to Helmholzstrasse 60 and in 1953 to its current name Elsasser Strasse 24-26.
In 1937 the cinema was operated by Hubert Resch Filmtheaterbetriebe. The sound system was by Klangfilm/Tobis. In 1943 the cinema was badly damaged by Allied bombs during World War II
On 13th May 1952 a new Lichtburg Filmpalast was opened at this site, designed to the plans of architect Hanns Ruttgers. It had a seating capacity of 872 in orchestra and balcony levels. The size of the stage was 15x6.2 meters. In 1966 the Lichtburg Filmtheater was renovated, again using the plans of architect Hanns Ruttgers. The size of the CinemaScope screen was 13x5.5 meters and the AP XII projectors were by Askania. In 1987 the cinema was twinned. In 1991 one more screen was added and in 2013 two more screens were added. The current 5-screens seat 359, 291, 145, 125 & 66.
