Located in the district of Elberfeld in the south of the city centre. The Thalia Theater was opened on 12th December 1906. Movies were screened with a live pre-programme. It was designed by Berlin based architect Otto Rehning with seating in orchestra and 3-balcony levels. The size of the screen was 13.5x21 meters. In 1929 an organ was installed. In 1931 a Klangfilm sound system was installed. In 1943 the theater was partially demolished by Allied bombs during World War II.
It was repaired to the plans of architect Rudolf Klophaus and re-opened on 25th September 1950. It was operated by Robert Batholomay Deutsche Filmtheater GmbH. In 1953 it was taken over by the Ufa Theatre AG chain. A CinemaScope screen and 4-track stereophonic sound was installed in 1956. The B12 projectors were by Bauer. The seats were by Kamphoener. Many top name artists appeared here over the years including: Sahrah Bernhardt, Eleona Duse, Asta Nielson, Lil Dagover, Charlie Rivel, Grock, Bruce Low, Rex Gildo, Udo Jurgens, Paul Anka, The Troggs, The Who, Hans Albers, Winnie Marcus, Willy Millowitsch, Vico Torriani, Heinz Erhardt and Josephine Baker. The Thalia Theater was closed in 1959.
It then housed a radio station and some rock concerts took place. In 1967 the building was demolished and it was replaced by a building of the Stadtsparkasse Wuppertal Bank.
