The Capitol Filmtheater was opened on 6th November 1936 with 1,000-seats in orchestra & balcony levels. It was operated by Vereinigte Lichtspiele Broker, Borgsmuller & Kaiser. The cinema was designed by architect Ernst Huhn. The size of the stage was 6x9 meters. In 1941 it was badly damaged by Allied bombs during World War II.
On 23rd December 1949 a new Capitol Filmtheater was opened on the site. It used the façade of the original cinema as it was not damaged during the war. The new Capitol Filmtheater was designed by architect Fritz Huttemann with a stage for live performances. In 1967 Fritz Rotschild took over and the orchestra level was converted into a store. The balcony level was enlarged and converted into a cinema with 400-seats. In 1982 Kinobretriebe Rehs took over the operation. In 1987 Hans Joachim Flebb CinemaxX AG took over.
Around 2000 a multiplex cinema operated by CineStar was opened in the town and a short time later on 28th February 2001 the Capitol Filmtheater was closed. It became a store.
