Capitol Theatre

Comerford Amusements Circuit saw its 54-year old Lyric Theater burn on March 23, 1961. The town convinced the circuit to build a new theatre a block away on the opposite side of the street. The “all new” Capitol Theatre was built beginning in August of 1961 and opened February 2, 1962 with Walt Disney’s “Babes in Toyland” with Annette Funicello and Ray Bolger.

Architect Lester F. Burlein described the theatre as a “Colonial-Suburban” approach with minimalist decorative elements. The Capitol Theatre was bathed in turquoise and pink with a gold front of house by the screen. The pink seating and vinyl turquoise wall definitely dated the auditorium quickly.

Sportservice Corporation of Buffalo took on it and many other area Comerford Theatres in 1974. In 1977, the theatre cited the failure of a “King Kong” remake as its reason to shed 17 hardtop theatres which included the Capitol Theatre. The theatre operated for a short-period in 1977/8 as an independent. It may have ceased operations on March 5, 1978 with the film, “Beyond and Back”.
