Modernes Theater

The Modernes Theater was opened on 12th December 1919 and was operated by Koln based Emil Schilling & Dusseldorf based Fritz Gewand. The cinema was designed by Dusseldorf based Oscar Rosendahl. The cinema contained 916-seats in orchestra & balcony levels. In 1928 it was renovated, again to the plans of architect Oscar Rosendahl. The foyer was silver & gold and the balcony level walls were covered with red velvet. The dome in the auditorium ceiling was gold with green strips and illuminated with concealed lighting. In 1930 it was taken over by the Ufa Theater AG chain and they installed a Klangfilm sound system. Around 1941 the cinema was badly damaged by Allied bombs during World War II.

A new Modernes Theater was opened on this site on 20th December 1949. It was designed by Dusseldorf based architect Ernst Huhn. This was his 70th cinema he designed. The cinema had 793-seats in orchestra & balcony levels. The auditorium walls were covered with silver & gold velvet. The seats and screen curtain were in red velvet material. The cinema did not have a stage for live performances, it was a film only house. The ceiling was illuminated with concealed lighting troughs. The E X projectors were by Ernemann and a sound system by Zeiss Ikon was installed.

The Cinema was closed around 1967-1970 and has since been demolished. In 2018 a SEB Bank is at this site.
