Capitol Palast

The Scala Filmtheater was opened in 1910 and was operated by Rheinische Lichtspiel Gesellschadt. Around 1925 an early sound film was presented in Triergon sound system. In 1926 it was re-named Westfalia Filmpalast. In 1928 the cinema was enlarged to 1,000-seats and re-named Capitol Lichtspiele Theatre. It was operated by Lichtspieletheater GmbH. In 1940 the Ufa Theatre AG chain took over operation. In 1943 the cinema was badly damaged by Allied bombs during World War II.

In 1950 a new Capitol Palast was built and re-opened in 1951. It was designed by architect Arthur Otto with 755-seats in orchestra & balcony levels. The cinema was operated by Hans Gille & Co. In 1954 a CinemaScope screen was installed and it was equipped with a 4-channel stereophonic sound system. The EX projectors were by Ernemann and the seats were by Schroeder & Henzelmann. The cinema was twinned in 1962.

The Capitol Palast was closed after 1971 and was converted into a discotheque named Capitol. By 2008 it was operating as the Onyx Discotheque.
