Located in the city center district of Altstadt Sud. The Hahnentor Lichtspiele was opened on 19th August 1948. It was operated by Willy Wolfs. The cinema was designed by Koln based architect Wilhelm Riphahn. He also designed the 1931 Ufa Filmpalast in Koln. The opening attraction at the Hahnentor Lichtspiele was the 1943 USA production of “The Song of Bernadette” (Das Lied der Bernandette) directed by Henry King and starring Jennifer Jones. Director of the German dubbed version was Kurt Hoffmann. The 1,501 seats were by Schroeder & Henzelmann and were all on one floor (there was no balcony). It was the largest cinema in Koln at that time. The B 8 projectors were by Bauer.
In 1955 the cinema was renovated to the plans of architect Hanns Ruttgers. The foyer was yellow & blue. The screen curtain was velvet striped blue & purple. The walls of the auditorium were purple. The seats were blue. The size of the CinemaScope screen was 14x6 meters and was manufactured by Mechanische Weberei based in Lippspringe. The size of the stage was 16x8x8.5 meters. A 4-channel stereophonic sound system by Klangfilm was installed.
In 1958 the cinema was renovated, again to the plans of architect Hans Ruttgers. At that time air-conditioning was added. In 1967 the seating capacity was reduced to 1,455. The Hahnentor Lichtspiele was closed on 30th May 1971. The building became a warehouse and was demolished in 1986.
