Picher, Oklahoma was a mining boom town as zinc and lead were valuable commodities especially during World Wars I & II. The city was incorporated in 1918 and theatres large and small including the Main Street Theatre opened in 1918.
On April 2, 1919, fire took out about a dozen building including the Main Street Theatre. While a new Main Street venue was being built, an Airdome was constructed and opened in time for the warm months of 1919. The Airdome operated until Main Street Theatre #2 opened on October 26, 1919. The Airdome was scheduled to reopen for the summer months of 1920. On February 6, 1920, however, both venues were destroyed when an arsonist burned the Main Street Theatre #2 down and the Airdome went with it.
Plans for a new tandem operation were drawn up in 1920 but never completed. The Airdome’s total operating period was just three months.
