The Sun Theatre began as a silent movie house launched by John Cosner. The theatre’s equipment and signage were first used in 1922 in nearby Broken Bow. It competed there against the Tiffany Theatre. The operator of the Tiffany Theatre, Horace F. Kennedy, bought out his competitor in 1926 selling its seating, Simplex S projectors and Gardener Velvet Gold Fibre movie screen.
A Broken Bow contractor helped Cosner build a new Sun Theatre in Sargent. It opened there on January 18, 1927. Cosner sold the Sun Theatre to R.W. Hicks who converted it to sound. At the end of a 10-year lease, R.W. Hicks took on the venue with a refresh. Norman Grint was likely the last operator closing it in the 1960’s. The Sun Theatre’s run was over 35 years.
