The town of O'Neill, Nebraska, hit a population size of 4,000 for the first and only time in 1980. That’s also the time at which O'Neill got its second, hardtop movie theater. Larry and Dottie Gokie launched the Last Picture Show in 1979 and it competed with the long-standing Royal Theatre in downtown.
The Picture Show outlasted the Royal Theatre which appears to have gone out of business after 75 years of operation in 1990. The Picture Show also operated a video store called Picture Show Video near downtown in a building called the Dan Ryan Theater.
The Gokies closed the video store and then the theater, the latter of which had apparently been more of a labor of love than a profitable venture toward the end of its lifecycle. Closing just shy of its 40th anniversary, its final film was January 28, 2018 with “Star Wars: The Last Jedi”.
