Originally the New Star Music Hall, it was partially rebuilt in 1887 and reopened as the Grand Theatre of Varieties. Further improvements were carried out in 1893. It was taken over by the Frank MacNaghten Vaudeville Circuit in August 1896 and played twice-nightly variety.
Animated pictures were first shown at the Grand Theatre in November 1896 as part of the variety programme. From December 1908, it was mainly used as a cinema. Fot a short period of time it was operating as the Bijou Theatre. It was closed in 1920 with plans being proposed to build a much larger ‘super kinema’ on the site. Film trade shows were held in the cinema until 1924, but the general public had not been allowed inside the building since its 1920 closure. Redevelopment plans never came to fruition and after falling into a state of dereliction, it was demolished in 1938.
