The Times-Standard of Eureka notes The Movies was opened by Redwood Theatres at the Bayshore Mall in November 1987 and was closed by Coming Attraction Theatres December 31, 2009. With only three of the the six screens open, employees of the second run cinema didn’t have to worry as they would be transferred to the Broadway Cinema.
The Minor Theater Corp., who according to the Times-Standard won a theatre war that started when he opened the Broadway Cinema (1995) as competition for The Movies at the Bayshore Mall, which at the time was owned by Signature Theatres.
In April 2006 Mr. Phillips, who started his chain January 1, 1972, with the Arcata Minor, sold his chain to his friend John Schweiger of Coming Attractions Theatres.
The Movies location at the mall was later occupied by Sports Authority and then in 2019 by Old Navy.
