The town of Indianola was served in the silent era by a Rex Theatre that became a Star Theatre. That theatre burned and the New Star Theatre became a sound era theatre which then became the Rex Theatre. It then became the IndianOla Theatre which closed in 1942.
The first Rex Theatre opened in 1917. It was a 200-seat venue that became the Star Theatre under new operators. The Star Theatre burned down on June 25, 1921 taking the local bakery and a lunch wagon with it. The new Star Theatre became the New Star Theatre when owner William Pland installed sound in July of 1929.
J.M. Neel took on the New Star Theatre closing it for a Streamlined Moderne style makeover with air-conditioning. Neel reopened on June 3, 1938 and changed it to the Rex Theatre with Gene Autry starring in “Boots and Saddles” supported by various short subjects. The Rex Theatre closed July 6, 1940 with “The Fighting 69th” with James Cagney.
On May 23, 1941, the theatre had another operator and relaunched as the IndianOla Theatre. It relaunched with the film, “Victory,” starring Frederic March. The IndianOla closed following the November 22, 1942 showing of “Are Husbands Necessary?” starring Ray Milland, supported by a Paramount newsreel and assorted short subjects.

Did this house later become the Roxy? This item appears in Showmen’s Trade Review of Octobe 19, 1946: “The name of the Roxy, Indianola, Neb., has been changed to the Ray by R. H. Phillips.”
