The Gem Theatre appears to be a 1910’s theatre that was created in an existing retail building and went out of business. It was purchased by J.M. Ruth who reopened it in March of 1920 after installing a 7-piece Wurlitzer pipe organ. He then gave the the theatre a new front and a cement floor that June with 200 new seats. The theatre converted to sound to stay relevant.
In 1935, new operators renamed the venue the Cairo Theatre with a new look. It went out of business soon after and reopened in 1936 under new management. They closed the theatre in November of 1937. Jesse Boring reopened the venue on December 3, 1937. Boring closed the theatre in 1939. It was reopened May 20, 1939 run by a consortium of local merchants. They closed it in December of 1940.
Gerald Stange took on the operation relaunching it on February 22, 1941 with “Virginia City” and “London Can Take It”. The theatre was still active in the 1950’s though remodeling and reducing capacity to 175 seats.
