The cinema opened on 17th May 1929 with “Weenen danst weer”. It is located at Mosplein in Noord, on the other side of the IJ stream. The brick-built building designed by architect Willem Noorlander was part of a complex with shops and homes. The cinema had 500 seats, and a 100 extra were added in 1938 by expanding the balcony. The directors were C.R. Hensel and J.J. Otter, who continued solo in 1936.
Otter remained associated with the Astoria Theater after 1937 through his operating company Charlottenberg NV and after his death both his daughters took over. In 1946 they renovated the cinema, but on 5th December 1966 they threw in the towel and closed the theatre with a screening of Tony Curtis in “The Great Race”. After this it became a supermarket, but the name ‘Astoria’ still graces the front until this day.
