On February 8, 1922, the cinema opened with Jean G. Ehrenfeldt as first director and shareholder of Cinema Royal NV. The cinema was built in 1921-22 to a design by the architects Harry Elte and Gerard F. Mastenbroek. The façade was mostly made of brick and kept sober, although decorations had been added such as ornamental masonry and stained glass windows. The interior was in an “oriental style”. The large hall was also characterized by simplicity and austerity. Weekly magazine Het Leven wrote enthusiastically: “The balcony is like a theater of its own, a great piece of space. Beautiful electric crowns give a distinguished appearance at the break, yet calm light". The interior design was supplied by De Bijenkorf.
The Cinema Royal closed in 1976 and was turned into a market hall. After a fire on December 30th 1978 the complex was demolished.
