The Church Administration of the Parish of St. Nicholas and Barbara “De Liefde”, on the Bilderdijkstraat acquired a office building 1903 -‘04 built as an office/warehouse for wine merchant Ferwerda & Tieman. Architect Karel Tholens was commissioned to make the building suitable as accommodation for the parish house. The interior underwent a major renovation, including a theatre in the basement. This room had 340 seats (later expanded to 372) and featured a cinema booth with a Zeiss sound film projector. Huis de Liefde opened on Sunday, September 18, 1932 and although the programming was similar to that of other cinemas, of course it remained an initiative of the church. The film approval was considered by the board and during performances the hall had “morality lighting”. In the long run it became mainly a Roman Catholic hall for rent, with meetings and events in addition to the film screenings. In 1968 a renovation took place, but it could not avoid the closure at the end of 1969. An attempt to start again as Cinema Room failed after just one year! The building was transformed several times and is now a Student Society.
