The Yallourn Theatre was opened on 19th May 1939 with Jeanette MacDonald & Nelson Eddy in “Sweethearts”. Seating was provided in stalls and balcony levels, and there was a cry-room at the rear of the auditorium. The stalls seating area had a slightly sloping floor which allowed use as a public hall as well as for cinema screening and stage productions. In September 1953 it became the first cinema outside Melbourne to screen 3D films when Vincent Price in “House of Wax” packed audiences into the cinema.
The town of Yallourn was a company town operated by State Electrical Commission(SEC) who operated the adjacent open-cut coal mine and wished to expand the site onto land where the Yallourn Theatre stood. It was closed in 1979 and was demolished in 1983.
