In 1939, Oscar D. Ramirez, Sr., opened one of three Spanish language theatres that operated in Cotulla. The Junco Theatre and the Rex Theatre were the other two. The town was also serviced by an English language theatre and drive-in. At one point the town - which never reached a population of 5,000 - had four operating theatres.
Following Ramirez and then Jose Jiminez, Jr., operators George Carpenteyro and Serapio Ramirez were competing in the 1940’s against the Rex Theatre. That led to a lawsuit. The lead distributor of Spanish language films was Azteca Film Distributing. Azteca was said to have booked 90% of its film and its owned and operated Rex Theatre while the Ramirez Theatre struggled for top bookings.
The Ramirez Theatre was still open in the 1950’s but eventually closed.
