Rafael S. Junco and his wife were central figures in the Spanish language commercial district of tiny Cotulla, Texas. They opened Teatro Junco de la Vega as a silent era film theatre in 1917 along with the R.S. Junco Dry Goods Store. The latter store lasted some 40 years and the theatre almost 20 years.
The Juncos appear to have closed the theatre in 1932 likely never converting to sound. The Juncos then continued film exhibition likely on a subleasing agreement in which the Majestic Theatre showed English language films four days a week and the Juncos Theatre using the Majestic Theatre up to three times a week for Spanish-language films.
As for the Junco Theatre, it reopened under a new operator mostly for live events and then appears to have closed in 1935. The Junco Theatre may have been expanded and converted to the Ramirez Theatre but the Ramirez Theatre has its own Cinema Treasure page. Spanish language films continued at both the Rex Theatre and the Ramirez Theatre into the 1950’s.
