The Ulysses Theatre’s lifespan was at least from World War I until the the end of the 1950’s and could have been even longer. The town had a local opera house and during World War I it had the Crystal Theater.
The Crystal Theatre showed movies just twice a day in a converted retail location. In 1921, new operator Harry Lewis built an airdome to play films in the hot summer months. In the Fall of 1921, the movie screenings continued.
The the Fall of 1926 and continuing into 1927, either the Opera House or the Crystal Theatre became the short-lived Jean Theatre. Under new operators in 1928, the former Crystal Theatre received a major makeover that sloped the floor and gave the theatre an orchestra pit. The theatre changed names to the Ulysses Theatre and soon gravitated to talkies in 1930. Its branding line was, “Home of good all talking pictures: A city theatre in a small town.”
The Ulysses Theatre was still in business in the late-1950’s likely closing in 1958. Because the town’s small population settled under 300, it’s likely the Ulysses Theatre’s best days were well behind it and the city theatre closed. To quote Joyce’s Ulysses, “As you are now so once were we".
