Colisee Cinema Theatre

Located in Nimes, to the northeast of Montpelier in the south of France. The Colisee Cinema Theatre was opened on 15th April 1927. Designed by architect George-Henri Pingusson in a Streamline Moderne deco style, it had seating for 1,000 in orchestra & balcony levels. There was an orchestra pit and a a stage, with dressing rooms. Music hall and circus were staged as well as films. In November 1929 it was equipped for sound films and “The Jazz Singer” starring Al Jolson was the first of these to be screened. In 1953 it was equipped with CinemaScope and in 1962 it was equipped with 70mm projectors to screen “West Side Story”.

In 1975 it was taken over by the K7 chain of multiplex cinemas and was converted into a 5-screen cinema in the balcony section and a shopping mall in the former orchestra section. In 1987 it was taken over by UGC. It was closed on 31st December 1988.

There were plans to convert it into a film museum, but these came to nothing. It was granted Listed building status on 22nd January 2015. This did not save it, and the auditorium was demolished by May 2019. The front of the building is in use as a bar & brasserie.
