Located on Darling Street, opposite Victoria Park. Monarch Picture Theatre(a open air theatre) opened in(circa 1908-1910). Monarch opened in(mid 1928?) possibly on the same site as the open air theatre(?). 1,116 seats(19 37 to 1944). 1,105 seats(1945 to 1955). Renamed Century Theatre by 1959 when it was operated by Western Cinemas Property Ltd.. 1,000 seats(1956 to 1967) when it was operated by Snider & Dean. 937 seats(1968 to 1970’s). Renamed New Monarch-Empire Theatre in(1970’s?). Renamed Empire in(1970’s?). Demolished(date unknown?). The site is now Dubbo Civic Centre.

When it opened on Wednesday 4th July, 1928, the Monarch was considered to be equal or better to any theatre in Sydney.
It certainly sounded quite opulent, with the local newspaper describing “soft rose lights infusing a romantic atmosphere throughout the auditorium”.
In August 1929, talkies were demonstrated at the theatre, with sound shorts presented with the main (silent) feature. It was announced in February 1930 that the first talking picture would be “The Innocents of Paris”, opening on 21st April that year.
The sound equipment was Western Electric.
