Mountain View Drive-In

The Mount Shasta Herald reported April 6, 1950, that construction had started on the 354-car Shasta View Drive-In at the Highways 99 and 89 junction. The next May 4 it was reported M.E. Hammond had held up the construction indefinitely due to the weather and other obstacles. Mr. Hammond, who also ran the Shastona Theatre, was reconsidering the project.

There was no other information on a Mount Shasta drive-in until May 1954 when it was reported the screen was almost finished at McCloud junction.

On June 3, 1954, the Herald noted between 375 and 400 cars attended the Mt-Vu Drive-In Theatre opening.

In 1986 the Herald referred to the location as the old Mountain View Drive-In and since June 2016 the VS Equine has been located on the site.

A 1993 aerial shows the ramps, but the drive-in had been closed for a considerable length of time. Sometime after 2012, the land was finally purchased and transformed. Today, there is no trace of the drive-in remaining.

Looks like May 28, 1954 was the precise opening date.

Boxoffice, Sept. 25, 1954: “The screen of the Mount Vu Drive-In at the foot of beautiful Mt. Shasta has been increased to 104x50 feet for CinemaScope. Mrs. Curtis Cheadle, secretary of the theatre company, reports the new 530-car airer, opened last May 28, boasts the most beautiful setting in the Northwest with the famed mountain for a background and spectacular scenery all around.”
