Theatre Royal

Located in Chorley, Lancashire. The Theatre Royal was opened on 30th September 1911. The proscenium was 30ft wide and the stage 30ft deep. There were four dressing rooms. It was soon operating as a cinema. By 1927 it was operated by the Chorley Theatre Co. Ltd offering pictures and occasional high-class concert parties.

Around 1930 it was refurbished and was equipped with a Western Electric(WE) sound system, reopening as the Royal Super Cinema with Al Jolson in “The Jazz Singer”. In 1932 it was taken over by the Associated British Cinemas(ABC) chain and they operated it until 1938.

The Hooley family took over the Theatre Royal (and also the towns' Pavilion Cinema). From 1945 it operated as a second run cinema, including many westerns. It was closed in the late-1950’s and stood derelict, although had occasional use as a venue for piano marathons and other strange attractions. It was demolished in 1959. A supermarket was built on the site which later became a McDonalds, which is now a Pizza Hut.
