Academy Cinema

In Erith, Kent, Erith Sports Centre opened on 20th May 1991. In addition to providing a full range of sporting activities, there was a daily creche and a Busy Bodies fitness studio.

Special events, such as conferences and wedding receptions, could be catered for - and there was also the Academy Cinema. Given its seating capacity of just 160, presumably this was located in a dedicated cinema room.

Little else is know about this cinema. It was listed in the British Film Institute’s Handbook for 1994; at the latest, it is presumed it closed down when the Centre underwent a very extensive refurbishment/rebuild in, I believe, the early-2000’s.

The ‘new’ Centre is said to be unrecognisable: the athletics track is still there, as are the tennis courts at the back, but inside it is a fully modernised sports facility. There is certainly no cinema presence now!
